At a time where several states are looking forward to federal regulations pertaining to the future of Internet Poker, the state of Utah broke from the norm by signing legislation and taking anticipative actions against banning online poker and gambling.

Utah’s anti-gambling legislation will effectively exclude the state from ever joining any federal online gambling ruling stating that “If any federal law is enacted that authorizes Internet gambling in the states and that federal law provides that individual states may opt out of Internet gambling, this state shall opt out of Internet gambling in the manner provided by federal law and within the time frame provided by that law.”

It is likely that this legislation relates to the fact that about 60% of the Utah population belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a faith which totally disowns all types of gambling. As per Rep. Stephen Sandstrom: “We want to keep Utah free from the negative impacts of legalized gambling.” “Many gambling critics see the DoJ’s recent interpretation as another major crack in America’s moral foundation.”

While Utah is standing its ground, other states including New Jersey and California have Internet Poker Bills in the pipeline while Nevada, where online poker regulations were approved in December last year, could legally be offering online poker by autumn this year.

The list of online gambling operators catering for the U.S market is thinning out even further.

The Everleaf Gaming Network has pulled out of the U.S poker market, following an investigation made by the U.S Department of Homeland Security. The authorities have suspended and taken funds from one of the main payment providers servicing Everleaf Gaming Network.

Everleaf Gaming Network was warned of legal actions should they continue their U.S operations.

As Everleaf is registered under the Lottery and Gaming Authority of Malta (LGA), they sought advice from LGA and the latter instructed them to terminate their U.S poker business.

Everleaf has now put a ban on play from the U.S.A and France.

It is said that their U.S players’ monies are safe and will be refunded. But it is not yet confirmed by when those U.S players have to withdraw their funds. Once all U.S. players leave Everleaf, the network will use Euros as the only currency.

There are not many Networks catering for the U.S market anymore. The happy few are Cake Poker, the Merge Gaming Network and Bovada.

This story will surely remind us of ‘Black Friday’. In April 2011, the U.S Department of Justice cracked down the U.S operations of Full Tilt, PokerStars and Absolute Poker which were then the largest online poker sites. Those companies were indicted on charges of bank fraud, money laundering and running illegal gambling operations. PokerStars has since then refunded its U.S. players and is still one of the most solid online poker sites. But the same cannot be said for Full Tilt and Absolute Poker, whose players have not seen a single cent yet.

Online casino operator Circus Groupe and Poker Stars are the first online poker sites in Belgium to be given the Casino de Namur A+ license.

Back in October 2010, Circus Groupe teamed up with Poker Stars, this allowed for Belgium residents to play online but this was all done on a test basis under the careful watch of Belgian Gaming Commission.

As PokerStars.be is now fully licensed, they are now permitted to provide online gambling to the Belgians.
Partouche.be is also licensed and currently operating in the country.

However, other gaming operators have not been so lucky. The Belgian Gaming Commission has published its first official online poker operator blacklist. Chilipoker.com, 888.com, Titanpoker.be, and Everestpoker.be amongst others have been banned from running their operations in Belgium. The Belgian government will be asking Internet Service Providers to prevent access to those sites.

Etienne Marique, chairman of the Belgian Gaming Commission said that it is a stepping stone in regulating the online gambling industry. And it allows operators to propose their services and to prosper in Belgium. But at the same time, as it is done in a secure environment, it ensures that players are well protected.

The biggest publicly traded online gambling firm PartyGaming plc and Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG, who is renowned for its online poker room PartyPoker.com and its sports betting brand Bwin have relaunched PokerRoom.com.

In November 2011, Josef Rantamäki, Bwin’s SEO Manager announced on Tweeter “Wow! www.pokerroom.com will be relaunched and once again offer real money poker games.”

A representative said that they were making use of Pokerroom.com as an affiliate but as it was generating traffic, they simply decided to relaunch it. Pokerroom.com is currently in a soft-launch stage as the Company wants to see how it will perform.

PokerRoom.com was founded in 1999 as an online poker cardroom and licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. It was the first online poker site to offer multi language customer service support.

PokerRoom.com had been operating for 10 years when it was closed down in April 2009. This was due to the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. Due to this legislation, the Ongame network and therefore PokerRoom.com decided to move out of the business, which then made way for PokerStars, Full tilt and Ultimate Bet to prosper in the US market.
